# What is Multi-accounting?

> Multi-accounting is when one person controls several prop firm accounts under different identities, or several people coordinate trades, to bypass allocation and risk limits.

In a prop firm, multi-accounting covers accounts opened under friends' or relatives' names, synthetic identities, and groups trading opposite sides of the same position across accounts so that one of them passes. It breaks the assumption that each account is an independent trader.

Detection combines KYC data, payment details, device fingerprinting, IP and location analysis, and trade correlation in the risk engine. Most firms check thoroughly at payout stage, when the cost of a false positive and a false negative are both highest.

The rule itself should be explicit: what counts as a related account, whether household members may trade, and what the firm will do when it finds linked accounts.

## Why it matters

Coordinated multi-accounting can drain a payout reserve quickly, and fighting it badly produces public accusations that a firm denies payouts on pretexts. Publish a clear rule with examples, verify identity before the first payout, and keep evidence for each decision. Your terms and your FAQ need to say the same thing.
