# What is Risk engine?

> A risk engine is the software that watches every prop firm account in real time, enforces loss limits and rules, and flags prohibited trading behavior.

In a prop firm, the risk engine is what turns the rules page into enforcement. It reads positions and equity from the trading platform, calculates each account's daily and maximum loss levels, closes or disables accounts on breach, and records the evidence.

Beyond breach checks, a risk desk uses the engine to flag abuse: identical trades across accounts, latency arbitrage, tick scalping, hedging between accounts, and banned EAs. Flags usually go to a human reviewer before a payout is denied.

Risk engines come from the platform vendor, the challenge-management provider, or a specialist third party, and they need accurate market data and clock time to be defensible in a dispute.

## Why it matters

Every breach email and every denied payout is only as defensible as the engine's log behind it. Make sure the numbers the engine uses match the numbers on your website and dashboard exactly, including time zones and rounding. Firms that cannot show the trader the calculation behind a breach lose disputes and reviews.
