# What is Weekend holding rule?

> A weekend holding rule decides whether a trader may keep positions open over the weekend market close, and what happens to positions that are still open.

In a prop firm, the weekend holding rule deals with the risk of price gaps between Friday's close and the next session's open. Some firms ban weekend positions entirely and close them automatically; others allow them in the evaluation but not the funded stage, or allow them on a swing account type for a higher fee.

The same logic applies to holding over daily session breaks and holidays in futures, where many firms require all positions to be flat before the session close.

A clear rule states the cut-off time and time zone, which instruments are covered (crypto may trade all weekend), and whether the firm will close positions or treat an open position as a breach.

## Why it matters

Gap risk is real for any firm that mirrors trades, and unclear holding rules generate breach disputes every Monday. Choose the policy deliberately, publish the cut-off in your own time zone and UTC, and if you offer a swing account, price it as a separate product on the pricing table.
