**Short answer:** Starting a small US hedge fund costs roughly US$100,000 at the lean end, according to a March 2026 AIMA article, and published service-provider estimates put investor-ready launches at US$150,000–300,000. The big lines are legal formation (about $15,000–$75,000 for a simple fund, $100,000+ for master-feeder), administration ($25,000–$75,000 a year) and audit ($20,000–$100,000 a year). Regulatory filing fees are small by comparison.

Hedge fund launch costs are hard to pin down because most published figures come from law firms, administrators and auditors describing their own market. We have collected the ranges they publish, with dates, and kept them side by side where they disagree. Treat every number as a starting point for written quotes, not a price.

For the steps themselves, read [how to start a hedge fund](/guides/how-to-start-a-hedge-fund) first.

> Every range below is as published by the source named, checked 12 October 2026. Several sources sell the service they price. This guide explains how things generally work in October 2026. It isn't legal, tax or investment advice and doesn't create a lawyer–client relationship. Rules differ by country and state and change often, so speak to a qualified lawyer before you act.

## What are the cost lines?

These are the lines that appear in almost every launch budget, with the published range for each.

**Hedge fund launch and first-year costs, published ranges (sources as named; checked October 2026)**

| Cost line | Published range | One-off or yearly | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal formation, simple US fund | $15,000–$50,000; another estimate $25,000–$75,000 | One-off | Coglianese CPA (undated); OakTech (Jan 2026) |
| Legal formation, master-feeder or offshore | $100,000 or more | One-off | Coglianese CPA (undated) |
| Regulatory and compliance setup | $5,000–$20,000 | One-off | OakTech (Jan 2026) |
| Form ADV filing fee (IARD) | $40–$225 registered advisers; $150 exempt reporting advisers | At filing and each annual amendment | SEC |
| Form D | No SEC fee; states may charge notice fees | Per offering | SEC |
| NFA, if a commodity pool operator | $200 application; $750 a year dues | One-off plus yearly | NFA |
| Fund administration | $25,000–$75,000 a year; also quoted as 2–4 basis points plus monthly minimums | Yearly | OakTech; Coglianese CPA |
| Audit | $20,000–$100,000 | Yearly | DIMOV Audit (Nov 2025); Coglianese CPA |
| Audit, tax and other professional costs (lean) | $10,000–$25,000 | Yearly | OakTech (Jan 2026) |
| Technology and infrastructure | $5,000–$30,000 | Yearly | OakTech (Jan 2026) |
| Bloomberg terminal | $27,000–$30,000 per seat | Yearly | Coglianese CPA (undated) |
| E&O, D&O and cyber insurance | "Five to low six figures" | Yearly | Coglianese CPA (undated) |
| Third-party marketers | 20% of management and performance fees | Ongoing | Coglianese CPA (undated) |

## Why do the estimates disagree?

The audit line shows the problem. DIMOV Audit puts a hedge fund audit at $20,000 to $100,000; OakTech's lean profile puts audit, tax and other professional costs together at $10,000 to $25,000 a year. Both can be true: the drivers DIMOV lists are fund size, complex instruments such as derivatives, multiple jurisdictions, the auditor's profile and investor reporting demands. A single US fund trading listed equities sits at the bottom; a master-feeder with derivatives sits at the top.

Administration works the same way. Basis-point pricing looks cheap, but monthly minimums dominate for a small fund, which is why Coglianese CPA describes administration as basis points "plus monthly minimums". Ask every administrator for the minimum in writing.

## What does a lean launch add up to?

As an illustration, adding the low end of each OakTech range (legal $25,000, compliance setup $5,000, administration $25,000, technology $5,000) to DIMOV's low-end audit ($20,000) gives about $80,000 for launch and a first year, before salaries, office, insurance and data. That is an estimate made by adding published ranges, not a quote, and it lines up with the AIMA view that US$100,000 is the minimum and "a very thin budget".

OakTech's own fund profiles run from $50,000–$100,000 in startup capital and about $10,000 a month for a lean first-time manager, to $150,000–$300,000 and $15,000–$20,000 a month for an investor-visible launch, and $300,000+ for an institutional-ready fund. OakTech does not say how it derived these figures.

**Illustrative lean launch plus first year (estimate; method: low end of OakTech ranges plus DIMOV low-end audit)**

| Line | Low-end figure used |
|---|---|
| Legal formation | $25,000 |
| Regulatory and compliance setup | $5,000 |
| Fund administration, first year | $25,000 |
| Audit, first year | $20,000 |
| Technology, first year | $5,000 |
| Total before people, office, insurance and data | About $80,000 |

## How many assets does the fund need to pay for itself?

Costs only make sense next to fee income. A 2024 Hedgeweek and Marex survey, reported by AIMA, found most emerging managers put break-even below US$100 million in assets: 32% said US$50 million or less and 55% said US$50–100 million. New-manager fees also run below "2 and 20": Seward & Kissel's 2025 study found average standard-class management fees of 1.69% for equity strategies and 1.88% for non-equity strategies.

A quick way to check your own number: multiply target assets by your management fee and compare it with yearly running costs. Performance fees are upside, not a budget line.

## Where do founders overspend or underspend?

The common mistakes are on both sides.

- Underspending on legal documents: Goldstein (AIMA, 2026) writes that legal, administration and compliance are often undervalued and that starting too lean can create risk later.
- Choosing a master-feeder before you have offshore investors: about one-third of 2025 launches in the Seward & Kissel study started as a US standalone fund.
- Paying for terminals and data before the strategy needs them.
- Leaving the website to the end: under Rule 506(b) it must avoid offering the fund publicly, which shapes the build. See [what a hedge fund website can say](/guides/hedge-fund-website).

## How do you get quotes you can compare?

Ask every provider the same questions, in writing, so the numbers line up.

- Legal: fixed fee or hourly? What is included (entities, offering documents, Form ADV, Form D, state filings) and what is billed extra?
- Administration: basis-point rate, monthly minimum, onboarding fee, and the price of investor reporting and tax documents.
- Audit: fee for the first year and later years, and what changes it (master-feeder, derivatives, number of investors).
- Prime broker: minimum account size, financing rates and any platform fees.
- Compliance: one-off manual and filings versus a monthly retainer.

## Where does the website fit in the budget?

A fund website is a small line next to legal and administration, but it is the first thing an allocator checks after an introduction. PipValley builds websites for prop firms and the trading businesses next to them; we have not built a hedge fund site for a client, and we would build yours to your counsel's marketing rules. See [websites for hedge funds and trading firms](/for/hedge-funds-and-trading-firms).
