**Short answer:** To start a forex prop firm in 2026 you need a company, a CFD platform you can't lose overnight (Match-Trader, TradeLocker, DXtrade, cTrader or MT5 through a provider), written challenge rules, a high-risk card processor plus crypto, KYC at payout and a website that says accounts are simulated. Platform risk is the forex trap: MetaQuotes cut prop firms off in February 2024, and Spotware restricted US prop onboarding to cTrader in 2026.

## At a glance

- **Market split:** Finance Magnates describes CFD and futures prop firms as each holding roughly half of the market (28 Aug 2025). [1]
- **2024 shake-out:** Finance Magnates Intelligence estimated 80–100 prop firms closed in 2024, with MetaQuotes stepping back from prop firms as the defining event. [2]
- **Tracked 2025 payouts:** Prop Firm Match tracked $324,963,316 of payouts in 2025; FundedNext about $107.8M and FundingPips about $97.1M. FTMO and The5ers are not in the tracker. [3]
- **Platforms on firm sites:** Across 529 analysable prop firm sites (12 Oct 2026): MT5 at 151, cTrader 107, Match-Trader 94, TradeLocker 54, DXtrade 52, MT4 46. Firms list several platforms, so counts overlap. [4]
- **Published platform prices:** Match-Trader white label $2,500/month, turnkey prop $4,000/month; TradeLocker Starter $3,000/month for up to 500 active accounts. [5][6]
- **cTrader and US traders:** Spotware restricted onboarding of US-based traders to cTrader through prop firms after a Q1 2026 internal regulatory assessment; FundedNext dated its change 31 Mar 2026. [7]
- **Leverage benchmark:** ESMA retail CFD caps (2018): 30:1 major FX pairs, 20:1 non-major pairs, gold and major indices, 5:1 single shares, 2:1 crypto. [8]
- **Card processing:** Stripe lists "Funded prop trading" among its prohibited financial products and services. [9]
- **Enforcement precedent:** The CFTC case against My Forex Funds (Traders Global Group) was dismissed with prejudice in New Jersey federal court, with sanctions against the CFTC (reported 26 May 2025). [10]
- **Capital-backed route:** PropSuite (our technology partner): $2,749 one-time setup, $0 monthly platform fee, founder share 50% of net rising to 70% at $300k+ monthly revenue. [11]

A forex prop firm sells evaluations. A trader pays a one-time fee to trade a simulated CFD account under your rules; those who pass and keep to the rules on a simulated funded account can request payouts calculated from simulated profit. The business is the same as any evaluation firm, so the general sequence lives in [the pillar guide](https://pipvalley.com/guides/how-to-start-a-prop-firm) and [the startup cost guide](https://pipvalley.com/guides/cost-to-start-a-prop-firm). This page covers what changes when the product is FX and CFDs.

If you are still choosing a market, compare this with [starting a futures prop firm](https://pipvalley.com/start-a-prop-firm/futures), [a crypto prop firm](https://pipvalley.com/start-a-prop-firm/crypto) and [a stock prop firm](https://pipvalley.com/start-a-prop-firm/stocks). The forex route has the most platform choice and the most competition; futures has a US-heavy customer base and exchange data costs; crypto adds 24/7 markets and stablecoin rails.

## What does the forex prop market look like in 2026?

Large, crowded and recovering from a shake-out. Finance Magnates Intelligence estimated that 80–100 prop firms closed in 2024, most of them after MetaQuotes withdrew support for prop firms on MetaTrader. By August 2025 Finance Magnates was describing the industry as split roughly evenly between CFD and futures firms.

Payouts are concentrated. Prop Firm Match tracked $324,963,316 of trader payouts in 2025: FundedNext about $107.8M, FundingPips about $97.1M, and FundedNext's futures arm about $46.9M. The tracker excludes firms that do not connect to it, FTMO and The5ers among them, so treat it as a floor, not a market total.

Counting firms is harder than it sounds. PropFirmPal (a comparison site that shares an owner with PipValley) held 633 active firm records in October 2026, where "active" means not marked inactive rather than verified as trading. Our own crawl of 529 analysable firm sites found MetaTrader 5 on 151, cTrader on 107 and Match-Trader on 94: the CFD platforms still dominate the sites traders compare.

## Which platforms can a new forex prop firm use?

A new forex prop firm can license Match-Trader, TradeLocker or DXtrade directly, take cTrader through Spotware or a reseller, or reach MT5 through a broker or technology provider still willing to serve prop firms. Which is safe depends on where your traders live and how much you depend on one vendor.

Platform risk is the defining event of forex prop. In February 2024 MetaQuotes moved against prop firms with US clients on MetaTrader; within days FundingPips told traders it would add Match-Trader, cTrader, DXtrade and TradeLocker to replace MT4/MT5 (FX News Group, 19 Feb 2024). It happened again in 2026: Spotware said that after "an internal regulatory assessment during the first quarter of 2026" it would restrict onboarding of US-based traders, and firms moved US traders to Match-Trader, TradeLocker and Volumetrica (Finance Magnates, 1 Jul 2026).

The lesson is that the platform is rented. Pick one your target traders already know, read the vendor's restricted-country terms before you sign, and plan a second platform within your first year. Our trading platform guide compares the options in depth, and each vendor has a full profile, for example [Match-Trader](https://pipvalley.com/tech/match-trader) and [TradeLocker](https://pipvalley.com/tech/tradelocker).

**Forex/CFD platform routes for a new prop firm (published terms, checked 12 Oct 2026)**

| Platform | How firms get it | Published price | Firm sites showing it (of 529) | Risk to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [MetaTrader 5](/tech/mt5-white-label) | Through a licensed broker or reseller layer (B2PROP, Brokeree, Match-Trader Prop CRM) | No MetaQuotes list price; B2BROKER cites $5,000–$15,000 setup and $1,000–$5,000/month for white labels | 151 | MetaQuotes action against prop firms in Feb 2024; access depends on a broker |
| [cTrader](/tech/ctrader) | Spotware direct or a cTrader White Label Prop reseller | Quote only (charged per account, per a reseller release) | 107 | US prop onboarding restricted in 2026 |
| [Match-Trader](/tech/match-trader) | White label, turnkey prop (platform plus CRM) or server licence | White label $2,500/month; turnkey $4,000/month; server $5,000/month | 94 | Single-vendor dependency |
| [TradeLocker](/tech/tradelocker) | Direct prop plans, simulated live environment or own bridge | Starter $3,000/month up to 500 active accounts | 54 | Single-vendor dependency |
| [DXtrade](/tech/dxtrade) | Devexperts direct | Quote only | 52 | Single-vendor dependency |

## Turnkey, CRM or capital-backed: which route fits?

The platform is only one layer. You also need a challenge engine and CRM (checkout, account provisioning, rule monitoring, payouts) and someone has to carry payout risk. Forex founders choose between three routes, and the published prices make the trade-off visible. The full comparison is on [white label vs your own platform](https://pipvalley.com/start-a-prop-firm/white-label-vs-own-platform).

With a capital-backed white label, the vendor supplies platform, capital, payouts and risk decisions, and you keep a share of revenue. PropSuite, our technology partner, publishes $2,749 one-time setup, no monthly platform fee and a founder share of 50% of net (60% at $100k+ monthly revenue, 70% at $300k+); PropAccount publishes setup from $3,000 with the founder earning 30% of gross (White Label I) or 50% of net (White Label II). With a turnkey or CRM licence you keep 100% of revenue but carry payout risk yourself: FXPropTech publishes $1,000/month plus $1,500 setup for up to 500 accounts, and Quadcode quotes white label prop setup from $17.5k.

**Forex prop firm routes and published prices (vendor sites, checked 12 Oct 2026)**

| Route | Example (published) | Who carries payout risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capital-backed white label | PropSuite: $2,749 setup, $0/month, 50–70% of net to founder. PropAccount: from $3,000 setup, 30% of gross or 50% of net | The vendor | Founders with an audience and little capital ([/start-a-prop-firm/with-10k](/start-a-prop-firm/with-10k)) |
| Turnkey platform plus CRM | Match-Trader turnkey $4,000/month; Quadcode from $17.5k setup | You | Founders with capital for a payout reserve |
| Prop CRM on a licensed platform | FXPropTech Startup $1,000/month plus $1,500 setup, up to 500 accounts | You | Operators who want control of rules and data |
| Own build | Quote-only components (CRM, risk, platform licence) | You | Established firms ([/start-a-prop-firm/own-platform](/start-a-prop-firm/own-platform)) |

## Which challenge models should a forex prop firm launch with?

Most forex firms launch with a 2-step evaluation, add a 1-step, and consider instant funding only once they understand their trader base. CFD prop software reflects this: FXPropTech lists 1-step, 2-step, instant funding and pay-later programmes as standard modules. Each model is a different risk and a different marketing story, and you can model the economics in the [prop firm profit calculator](https://pipvalley.com/tools/prop-firm-profit-calculator).

Instant models need the most careful wording. An instant account may have no profit target, but if withdrawals are capped per cycle or held above a buffer, that limit belongs in the same block as the benefit. The pricing table is where models compete: traders read account size, price, target, daily loss, max loss, minimum days, split and payout cycle across one row.

**Forex challenge models: how they work and what they mean for the operator (industry practice, Oct 2026)**

| Model | How it works | Operator view |
|---|---|---|
| 2-step | Two phases with profit targets and daily and maximum loss limits, then a simulated funded account | The industry default; lowest price per account size; most predictable |
| 1-step | One phase, usually with a higher target or tighter drawdown | Faster for traders; price must reflect a higher pass rate |
| Instant | No evaluation; trading starts on a simulated funded account with payout conditions | Highest payout risk; needs withdrawal caps and buffers stated plainly |
| 3-step | Three phases at a low entry price | Rare; price-led; long path to payout |
| Pay later | Small fee to start, the rest when the trader passes | Lower conversion barrier; more chargeback exposure |

## How do you set instruments, leverage and commissions?

Set them so the simulated account behaves like a realistic retail account and your payout risk stays predictable. Most forex firms offer major and minor FX pairs, metals, major indices and some crypto CFDs. Every instrument you add is another rules question (news, weekend holding, rollover) and another price feed to watch for bad ticks, so start narrower than you think.

A useful benchmark for leverage is the cap regulated EU brokers apply to retail clients: ESMA set 30:1 on major currency pairs, 20:1 on non-major pairs, gold and major indices, 10:1 on other commodities, 5:1 on single shares and 2:1 on crypto. Prop firms are not bound by it when accounts are simulated, but higher leverage increases the spread of outcomes and therefore payout risk. Publish commission per lot and any spread mark-up per account type; a cost a trader discovers after buying becomes a complaint.

## Can a forex prop firm accept US traders?

That is a legal and a platform question, and the platform half has narrowed twice since 2024. Many CFD firms stopped serving US traders after MetaQuotes' 2024 action, and cTrader closed new US prop onboarding in 2026. Large firms built regulated routes back: Finance Magnates reported FTMO's US return on 26 Aug 2025 with MT5 through its OANDA partnership, and FTMO closed its acquisition of OANDA on 1 Dec 2025. A new firm does not have those broker relationships.

On the enforcement side, the CFTC's case against My Forex Funds was dismissed with prejudice in May 2025 after a special master found the agency made false representations to the court. That ruling sanctioned how the case was run; it is not a ruling that the model is lawful. Read [are prop firms legal in the US?](https://pipvalley.com/guides/are-prop-firms-legal-in-the-us) and the [United States jurisdiction page](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/united-states), then take these questions to a US lawyer:

- Does offering simulated CFD evaluations to US residents raise any registration question for our structure?
- Which platforms can we lawfully offer to US traders, and on what vendor terms?
- How must we describe payouts and results to US customers?
- Should we restrict the US at launch, and how do we enforce that at checkout and KYC?

> This page explains how things generally work, with dated sources. It is not legal, tax or financial advice. Rules differ by country and change often: speak to a qualified lawyer (and a tax adviser) in each jurisdiction you sell into before you launch.

## Does a forex prop firm need a licence?

Many forex evaluation firms run without a financial licence because traders do not deposit trading funds, accounts are simulated and the firm does not route client orders. That changes if the firm brokers real trades, holds client money, copies traders into a live book under its own name, or markets into a place that treats the product as a financial service. The general picture is in [do prop firms need a license?](https://pipvalley.com/guides/do-prop-firms-need-a-license); the place-by-place picture is on the jurisdiction pages for [Cyprus](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/cyprus), [the UK](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/united-kingdom), [Dubai](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/dubai), [Seychelles](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/seychelles) and [Mauritius](https://pipvalley.com/jurisdictions/mauritius).

Forex founders also ask about "forex licences" sold by offshore agents. A securities-dealer or forex licence is a brokerage licence: you need one if you become a broker, not to sell simulated evaluations. Buying one for credibility adds capital, audit and reporting obligations. Ask a lawyer in the place you incorporate, and in your main customer markets, what your exact structure needs.

## How do payments work for a forex prop firm?

Forex prop firms take challenge fees through high-risk card processors plus crypto, because mainstream processors restrict the category: Stripe lists "Funded prop trading" among its prohibited businesses. Expect a rolling reserve, higher fees than standard e-commerce and close watching of your chargeback ratio. The detail is on payments for a prop firm and [prop firm payment processing fees](https://pipvalley.com/guides/prop-firm-payment-processing-fees).

Crypto matters more for forex than futures because the customer base is global. Published examples: [Match2Pay](https://pipvalley.com/tech/match2pay) charges 0.30%–1.00% on incoming crypto and 0% processing on crypto payouts (network fees $1.00–$2.50); [NOWPayments](https://pipvalley.com/tech/nowpayments) starts at 1%. Identity checks usually happen at the first payout, not at purchase: [Sumsub](https://pipvalley.com/tech/sumsub) publishes $1.35 per verification and [Veriff](https://pipvalley.com/tech/veriff) $0.80 on its Essential plan. Say on the payouts page that KYC comes before the first payout; see KYC and payouts.

## What does it cost to start a forex prop firm?

The platform route and who carries payout risk decide the budget. A capital-backed white label can start for a few thousand dollars because the vendor carries payouts; a licensed platform plus CRM costs from roughly $1,000–$4,000 a month in published fees before payments, KYC, legal, marketing and a payout reserve. Run your own numbers in the [launch cost calculator](https://pipvalley.com/tools/prop-firm-launch-cost-calculator) and read the line-by-line [startup cost guide](https://pipvalley.com/guides/cost-to-start-a-prop-firm); budget pages cover $10k, $50k and [little or no money](https://pipvalley.com/start-a-prop-firm/with-no-money).

**Published cost lines a forex prop firm can price today (vendor sites, checked 12 Oct 2026)**

| Line | Published example | Billing |
|---|---|---|
| Capital-backed white label | PropSuite $2,749 setup, $0/month platform fee | One-time plus revenue share |
| Trading platform | TradeLocker Starter $3,000/month (500 active accounts) | Monthly |
| Platform plus prop CRM | Match-Trader turnkey $4,000/month | Monthly |
| Prop CRM | FXPropTech Startup $1,000/month plus $1,500 setup | Monthly plus setup |
| KYC | Sumsub $1.35/verification ($149 minimum monthly); Veriff $0.80 ($49 minimum monthly) | Per check |
| Crypto checkout | Match2Pay 0.30%–1.00% deposit fee; NOWPayments from 1% | Per transaction |

## What does a forex prop firm website need?

The platform runs the dashboard; it does not build the marketing site. A forex site needs a pricing table that shows every rule on one row, a rules hub with one page per rule and a worked example, a payouts page (methods, minimums, timing, KYC), platform pages, an FAQ centre, an affiliate page, legal pages and the simulated-trading disclosure on every page that mentions results. Forex demand is global, so plan language editions early. See the website component and [forex prop firm websites](https://pipvalley.com/services/forex-prop-firm-websites).

Clarity is also how a new firm competes with hundreds of others. Traders have watched firms close and change rules; TradeInformer reported in August 2025 that Trustpilot revoked three prop firms' access over fake reviews. A site that states every rule plainly, shows payout mechanics honestly and answers questions before they become tickets is an advantage most competitors don't have.

- Niche: a language market, a trading style (swing, news, algorithmic) or a community you already serve.
- Rules clarity: one page per rule, with a worked example and the date it last changed.
- Honest proof: payout mechanics and sourced statistics, not cumulative totals nobody can check.
- Speed: a site that loads fast on a phone in the markets you target.

## Launch steps

1. **Choose the route:** Decide capital-backed white label, turnkey or CRM-plus-platform, using the published prices above and the payout reserve you can fund.
2. **Pick two platforms:** Choose a primary CFD platform your traders know and a second you can switch to; read each vendor's restricted-country terms first.
3. **Write the product:** Set account sizes, prices, models (2-step first), instruments, leverage per class and commissions, each rule with a worked example.
4. **Form the company and take advice:** Incorporate, open banking, and have a lawyer review terms, risk disclosure, simulated-trading notice, refund and payout policies and your US position.
5. **Set up payments and KYC:** Apply to a high-risk card processor, add a crypto route, and configure KYC at first payout with a published payout schedule.
6. **Build the website:** Pricing table, rules hub, payouts, platform pages, FAQ centre, affiliate page and legal pages, in your launch languages, with disclosures.
7. **Configure and test:** Make the platform risk rules match the website word for word; test breaches, news restrictions and weekend holding before launch.
8. **Soft launch:** Open to a small group, fix what breaks in checkout, credentials and support scripts, then open to the public and brief affiliates.

## Questions

### How much does it cost to start a forex prop firm?

It depends on the route and on who carries payout risk. A capital-backed white label such as PropSuite publishes $2,749 setup and no monthly platform fee, because the vendor pays traders. A licensed platform with CRM publishes roughly $1,000–$4,000 a month before payments, KYC, legal, marketing and the payout reserve you must hold yourself. Use the launch cost calculator to model your own case.

### Can a new forex prop firm still use MT5?

Sometimes, through a broker or technology provider still willing to serve prop firms, but access has been unreliable since MetaQuotes moved against prop firms with US clients in February 2024. MT5 still appears on 151 of the 529 firm sites we checked, yet a new firm has no direct MetaQuotes route. Plan a second platform such as Match-Trader or TradeLocker from day one.

### Do forex prop firms need a license?

Many run without a broker licence because traders deposit no trading funds and accounts are simulated. That can change if you route real orders, hold client money or market into places that treat the product as a financial service. Whether your structure needs a licence is a question for a lawyer in your company's jurisdiction and in your main customer markets, not an assumption.

### Can forex prop firms accept US traders?

Some do, through regulated routes such as FTMO's 2025 return via OANDA, but platform access has narrowed: Spotware restricted US prop onboarding to cTrader in 2026, and MetaQuotes acted in 2024. A new firm should take US legal advice, decide whether to restrict the US at launch, and enforce that decision at checkout and KYC.

### Is a forex or a futures prop firm easier to start?

Neither is easy, but they fail differently. A forex firm faces more competition and more platform risk, with a global customer base and heavy reliance on crypto payments. A futures firm faces exchange data costs, fewer platform routes since ProjectX became Topstep-only, and a US-heavy customer base with its own legal questions. Pick the market whose traders you already reach.

### How do I start a forex prop firm with a white label?

Choose a capital-backed white label if you have an audience but little capital, or a turnkey platform if you can fund payouts and want all revenue. Compare published terms, sign, configure rules and prices in the vendor dashboard, connect payments and KYC, then launch your own website that hands checkout to the platform. Vendors run the dashboard; none we checked builds your marketing site.
