MT4 White Label for Prop Firms: Should You Still Use It?
Why MT4 white labels are a legacy route for prop firms: no new MetaQuotes MT4 licences since 2018, the 2024 grey-label cut-offs, and what to do instead.

MetaTrader 4 still has loyal traders, scripts and Expert Advisors built over two decades, so founders ask whether they should offer it. For a new prop firm in 2026 the answer is usually no, and this guide explains why, what an MT4 white label actually is, and what to do if your audience insists on it.
What is an MT4 white label?
An MT4 white label is a branded MT4 terminal and account set that a provider runs for you on its own MetaQuotes MT4 server licence. You don't hold a licence; you rent a branded slice of someone else's. The same white-label and grey-label distinction applies as for MT5: a white label runs with the developer's knowledge, a grey label is an informal resale.
Why is MT4 a legacy route?
MT4 is a legacy route because MetaQuotes stopped issuing it to new businesses years ago. FinanceFeeds reported in January 2018 that MetaQuotes confirmed on January 12, 2018 it "will stop issuing new licenses to new brokerages", that brokers already on MT4 could keep using it, and that no new servers would be issued. Every MT4 white label today therefore sits on an older licence owned by someone else.
For prop firms that dependency proved costly. In February 2024 grey-label brokers cut prop firms off MetaTrader, and firms including Funding Pips moved to other platforms within days, according to Finance Magnates. MetaQuotes never published a formal prop policy. A platform you can't license directly, from a developer that doesn't publish its rules, is the riskiest foundation a prop firm can choose.
Cost is moving the wrong way too. Finance Magnates reported that MetaQuotes raised MetaTrader licence fees by 20–25% from January 1, 2025, with a full MT4 package for a broker estimated at about $35,000 a month by anonymous industry sources. White-label prices are quote only.
| Question | MT4 white label | MT5 white label | Direct-licence platform (cTrader, Match-Trader, TradeLocker, DXtrade) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New licences from the developer? | No (stopped January 2018) | White labels via existing licence holders | Yes, contract with the vendor or its resellers |
| Published prop-firm policy? | No | No | Prop products and pricing published by several vendors |
| 2024–26 disruption | Grey-label cut-offs, Feb 2024 | Grey-label cut-offs, Feb 2024 | cTrader US restriction, 2026; vendor licence terminations possible |
| Trader familiarity | High among long-time forex traders | Highest | Growing; varies by audience |
| Typical price signal | Quote only | Ranges published by providers | From $2,500 a month (Match-Trader) or $3,000 a month (TradeLocker Starter), as published |
What if your traders want MT4?
If your audience wants MT4, ask what they actually want from it. Usually it is one of three things: familiar charts, their Expert Advisors, or copy-trading tools. Each has an alternative. Many modern platforms offer TradingView-style charting; cTrader supports its own automated trading; and your rules page can explain which algorithmic trading is allowed on the platforms you do offer.
If a broker partner offers you MT4 through a properly licensed white label and explicitly permits prop use in writing, it can be a second platform. It should not be your only one.
How do you move traders off MT4 if you already use it?
If you already run on MT4, move traders off it on your own timetable rather than a vendor's. The firms cut off in February 2024 had days, not months: Funding Pips paused services and returned on Match-Trader in about a week, according to Finance Magnates. A planned move takes longer but loses fewer traders.
Start by adding a second platform for new sales while existing accounts finish on MT4. Publish the date after which new MT4 accounts stop, give traders mid-evaluation a clear choice (finish on MT4 or transfer progress), and say what carries over: balance, phase and days traded. Keep both platforms running in parallel until the last MT4 account closes or transfers.
- Announce the change on a dated page and by email before you change checkout.
- Update the pricing table so MT4 disappears from new purchases on the announced date.
- Rewrite rules that depended on MT4 behaviour, such as EA policy and order types.
- Brief affiliates so their reviews and videos stop sending traders to MT4 sign-ups.
What does an MT4 route mean for your website?
An MT4 route needs the same website plumbing as any third-party platform, plus extra care with how you describe automated trading.
- Platform page per platform with download links, credential delivery steps and a clear "platform availability can change" notice.
- EA and automation policy on its own rules page, with examples of what is and isn't allowed, because MT4 traders will ask first.
- Checkout hand-off that records the platform choice and blocks it in countries where the server can't serve traders.
- A migration plan: if MT4 access ends, a dated notice at the old URL, updated FAQs ("do I need new logins?") and redirected help pages.
Questions
Can I still get an MT4 licence for a prop firm?
You can't get a new MT4 licence from MetaQuotes; it stopped issuing MT4 licences to new brokerages in January 2018. Any MT4 offering today runs on an existing licence holder's server, so check that holder permits prop-firm use.
Is MT4 or MT5 better for a prop firm?
Neither is a safe single platform for a new prop firm in 2026. MT5 is more widely offered, but both depend on a licence holder's goodwill. Pair either with a platform you can license directly.
Do prop firms still use MT4?
Some established firms still list MT4, often through broker partnerships. In PropFirmPal's September 2026 data for 245 firms, MT5 appeared far more often than MT4, and newer firms mostly launch on direct-licence platforms.
