Start a prop firm for stocks: platforms, data, rules.
Stock evaluations are a smaller, less crowded market than forex or futures, and the tooling arrived in 2025–26. Here is how a founder builds one: product choice, platforms, market data, rules and the legal line.

- FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10 (20 Apr 2026) replaced the day-trading margin rules: the pattern day trader test and $25,000 minimum go, effective 4 Jun 2026, with phase-in to 20 Oct 2027. 1
- Nasdaq TotalView 2026

- PropAccount added US stock challenges (single-session and swing) to its white-label stack in April 2026, saying existing partners pay nothing extra. 3
- CFD-based rivals

- Trade The Pool launched in Sep 2022 on TraderEvolution with 3,000+ CFDs on US equities and ETFs built with Cboe; it is backed by the company behind The5ers. 4

- TraderEvolution runs evaluation accounts in a market emulator with per-account risk (flat licensing, no per-account fees, they say); Sterling sells a trading simulator plus Reg T and PM margin. 56
- Data gating
- Tickblaze says it is a licensed CME and NASDAQ direct distributor with pro vs non-pro gating, and that a firm can launch in under 30 days. 7
- Leverage benchmark
- ESMA's retail CFD cap on individual equities is 5:1, against 30:1 on major FX pairs. 8
A stock prop firm sells evaluations on equities: traders pay a fee, trade a simulated account in US shares, ETFs or equity CFDs under your rules, and those who pass can request payouts from simulated profit. Searches for "prop firm for stocks" and "stock trading prop firm" come from traders who find most prop firms are forex or futures only, which is the opening for a founder.
This page is the founder's view. The general sequence is in the pillar guide; options are on their own page, starting a prop firm for options, because the risk problems are different.
Which platforms can run a stock prop firm?
Few prop vendors cover exchange-traded equities; TraderEvolution says most prop platforms cover forex/CFDs or futures but rarely equities, while it covers all from one deployment. These are the equity-capable options in our vendor dataset. None publishes a prop-firm price except PropAccount's white-label terms.
| Vendor | What it offers for stocks | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| TraderEvolution | Multi-asset back end with a market emulator for evaluations and per-account risk; powers Trade The Pool | Quote only; flat licensing, no per-account fees (they say) |
| Tickblaze | Platform, OMS/OME and prop CRM; NASDAQ direct distributor with pro vs non-pro gating | Quote only |
| Sterling Trading Tech | Equities, options and futures platforms, trading simulator, OMS 360, Reg T and PM margin | Quote only |
| PropAccount | Capital-backed white label with US stock challenges (single-session and swing) since Apr 2026 | Setup from $3,000; founder 30% of gross or 50% of net |
| DXtrade | Prop edition listing stocks among its markets | Quote only |
| Volumetrica | Prop dashboard and platforms for futures and stocks | Quote only |
| WealthCharts | Charting and execution platform integrating prop firms (sells to traders, not a white label) | No B2B price |
What does equities market data cost?
If you price from exchange data, each trader is a data subscriber, and the professional/non-professional line decides the bill, just as with futures. Nasdaq's 2026 price list shows the spread: TotalView depth costs $84.00 a month per professional subscriber but $15.00 per non-professional; Nasdaq Basic for Nasdaq-listed issues costs $14.10 per professional and $0.50 per non-professional. Redistributing data also carries firm-level fees, such as Nasdaq Basic's $2,140 a month external distributor fee.
In practice your platform vendor is usually the distributor and passes costs through in its quote. Ask who holds the exchange agreements, how traders are classified (and whether a funded trader becomes professional), and whether top-of-book is enough for your rules. Level 2 depth is a selling point for day traders, but it multiplies the per-user cost.
| Product | Professional | Non-professional |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq TotalView (Nasdaq, NYSE and regional issues) | $84.00 | $15.00 |
| Nasdaq Basic, Nasdaq issues | $14.10 | $0.50 |
| Nasdaq Basic, NYSE issues | $7.20 | $0.25 |
| Nasdaq Basic, other regional issues | $7.20 | $0.25 |
Does the pattern day trader rule still matter for a stock prop firm?
Much less than it did. The pattern day trader rule made US margin accounts that day-traded four or more times in five business days hold $25,000, which pushed small-account stock traders toward prop firms. FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10 (20 Apr 2026) replaced those requirements: the day-trade count test and the $25,000 minimum are removed and new intraday margin standards apply, effective 4 Jun 2026, with brokers allowed to phase in until 20 Oct 2027.
Two consequences for founders. First, "trade stocks without $25,000" is a weaker marketing line than it was; lead with capital size, rules and payouts instead. Second, the rule never applied to simulated evaluation accounts, but it matters if your funded stage routes real orders through a broker, where the broker's margin rules apply. Check claims on your site against the current rule.
Which challenge rules suit stocks?
Stocks trade in sessions with pre-market, after-hours, halts and earnings gaps, so rules must say what happens in each. PropAccount's launch offers single-session (flat by the close) and swing (overnight allowed) challenges, a useful split to copy. Typical stock rules, written as published rules with examples:
- Session: regular hours only, or pre-market and after-hours too; flat-by-close time for intraday accounts.
- Overnight and weekend holding, with any earnings-date restriction.
- Halts and limit-up/limit-down: how simulated positions are treated when trading stops.
- Position size as dollars or a share of average daily volume, to stop unrealistic fills in thin stocks.
- Short selling: allowed or not, and whether hard-to-borrow names are excluded.
- Minimum price (for example no penny stocks) and a restricted-symbol list.
- Daily loss and maximum drawdown in dollars, with a worked example.
Do you need a licence to run a stock prop firm?
A simulated evaluation firm that takes no deposits and routes no customer orders is usually treated like other evaluation firms, but equities sit under securities law, and the line moves if the funded stage trades real shares. A firm that allocates real capital to traders in US equities is typically a registered broker-dealer or works through one, and traders on a registered proprietary desk need FINRA qualifications (the Series 57 for proprietary traders, per Curved Trading's July 2026 guide). See do prop firms need a license? and the United States page.
What does a stock prop firm cost, and what does the site need?
The cheapest entry is a capital-backed white label with an equities module (PropAccount publishes setup from $3,000). A direct equities platform is quote-only and adds per-user data. Add payments, KYC, legal review, marketing and a payout reserve if you carry payouts; use the launch cost calculator and startup cost guide.
The website must say plainly whether traders get CFDs or exchange-priced shares, list tradable symbols or universes, show the session and halt rules, and explain data (included, or a fee). Stock traders compare with brokers they already use, so speed and clarity matter. See the website component and prop firm website design.
Launch steps, in order
- Choose CFDs or exchange-priced sharesCFDs suit a forex firm adding stocks; exchange-priced shares suit US stock traders but bring per-user data fees.
- Shortlist equity platformsAsk TraderEvolution, Tickblaze, Sterling, DXtrade or a white label with equities for symbols, sessions, data terms and pricing.
- Budget market dataGet the distributor and per-user data costs in writing, including what happens when a funded trader is classed as professional.
- Write session-aware rulesSingle-session or swing accounts, halts, earnings, short selling, minimum price, size limits and dollar drawdown, each with an example.
- Take securities-law adviceHave a lawyer confirm where the simulated model ends and broker-dealer rules begin for your funded stage and markets.
- Payments, KYC, websiteSet up a high-risk card processor plus crypto, KYC at first payout, and a site that states product type, symbols and rules.
- Test and launchRun test accounts through opens, halts and earnings days, then soft launch to stock-trading communities.

Your website, whatever platform you choose
Every route on this page still needs a marketing website: the pricing table, rules, payouts, FAQ, legal pages and the checkout hand-off to your platform. Platforms and white labels run the dashboard; they don’t build that site. PipValley does, for any platform, from $1,490 (pricing, launch service, what the site includes).
Questions
How do I start a stock prop firm?
Decide whether traders get equity CFDs or exchange-priced US shares, choose a platform or white label that supports that product, budget market data per user, and write rules for sessions, halts, earnings and short selling. Then form the company, take securities-law advice, set up payments and KYC, build the website and soft launch. The steps on this page give the order.
Are stock prop firms CFD-based?
Most are. Finance Magnates noted in April 2026 that most rival stock offerings use equity CFDs; Trade The Pool launched with 3,000+ US equity and ETF CFDs built with Cboe. Exchange-priced share challenges arrived more recently, for example in PropAccount's equities module. Tell traders clearly which one you sell, because it affects symbols, fills and data.
Did FINRA remove the pattern day trader rule?
Yes. FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10, published 20 April 2026, replaced the day-trading margin requirements: the four-trades-in-five-days test and the $25,000 minimum are gone, and new intraday margin standards apply from 4 June 2026. Brokers may phase the change in until 20 October 2027, so some still apply the old limits for now.
How much does stock market data cost a prop firm?
It depends on the feed and the subscriber type. Nasdaq's 2026 list shows TotalView depth at $84.00 a month per professional and $15.00 per non-professional subscriber, and Nasdaq Basic for Nasdaq issues at $14.10 and $0.50. Platform vendors usually distribute the data and pass it through in their quote, so ask for it in writing.
What platforms do stock prop firms use?
Equity-capable prop platforms include TraderEvolution, which powers Trade The Pool, Tickblaze, Sterling Trading Tech, DXtrade and PropAccount's equities module, which runs on the same back end as its other markets. CFD firms also offer stock CFDs on MT5 through providers, DXtrade or Match-Trader. Most vendors quote privately, so compare them on symbols, data and simulation quality.
