How to Start a Forex Brokerage (2026 Guide)

How to start a forex brokerage in 2026: business model, licence, capital, platform, liquidity, CRM, payments and website, in order, with sourced figures.

A forex brokerage takes client deposits and gives clients access to currency and CFD markets through a trading platform. That makes it a regulated financial business in most countries that matter, which is the biggest difference from an evaluation-style prop firm. The order you do things in decides how much you spend before your first client deposits.

This guide walks through the steps a founder takes, in order, with figures from regulators, vendors and licensing consultants, each dated and cited. Where only a consultant or vendor publishes a number, we say so. If you are still choosing between a brokerage and a prop firm, our guide comparing white label forex broker cost with a prop firm puts the two budgets side by side.

Step 1: Decide your execution model

Before you talk to a regulator or a platform vendor, decide how client trades will be handled, because it sets your licence category, your capital and your risk. In broad terms there are three models.

  • Agency or STP (often called A-book): you pass client orders to a liquidity provider and earn from markups and commissions. You carry less market risk but depend on your liquidity terms.
  • Market making (often called B-book): you take the other side of client trades. Revenue can be higher and so is the risk; regulators usually treat this as dealing on own account, which carries the highest capital tier.
  • Hybrid: some flow is passed on, some is kept, under a written risk policy. Most retail brokers end up here, and regulators expect the policy to be documented.

Step 2: Choose a jurisdiction and get licensed

Pick the jurisdiction from your target clients backwards. A licence in one country rarely lets you market to clients in another, and payment providers, banks and ad platforms all check which regulator authorises you. Our forex broker license guide compares regulators in detail; the table below shows how far capital requirements vary.

  • Timelines vary as much as capital. Salvus Funds estimates 12 to 16 months for a CySEC investment firm application and about three months (budget four to six) for a well-prepared Seychelles securities dealer application.
  • Capital is a floor, not a budget. Regulators can ask for more based on your risk profile, and you still need working capital to run the business.

Step 3: Form the company and open banking

Form the company in the jurisdiction where you will be licensed, with directors and compliance staff who meet the regulator's fitness tests. Open operating accounts and, if your licence lets you hold client money, separate client money accounts. Banks review brokerages carefully; expect due-diligence questions about your owners, your model and your target countries, and allow time for it.

Step 4: Choose a platform and liquidity

Most new brokers rent a platform rather than license one directly. B2Broker's April 2026 guide puts an MT5 white label at $5,000–$15,000 to set up and $1,000–$5,000 a month for the core platform, or $2,700–$11,000 a month all-in once liquidity, CRM and add-ons are included. It also says MetaQuotes stopped issuing new MT5 white label licences in late 2022, so new brokers sub-license through an existing holder or choose another platform such as cTrader, Match-Trader or DXtrade.

Finance Magnates reported in February 2025 that MetaQuotes raised its licensing fees by roughly 20% to 25% from January 2025, which flows through to white-label prices. Our white label forex broker guide explains the model, and the matching cost guide lists published prices.

Step 5: Add a CRM, payments and KYC

The CRM is your back office and client portal: onboarding, KYC, deposits and withdrawals, introducing broker (IB) commissions and reporting. B2Broker's B2CORE, for example, publishes plans from $1,000 a month (Starter) to $20,000 a month (Enterprise), with a fee of 1.00% down to 0.10% on successful deposits. Our forex broker CRM guide compares features and published prices.

Payments are a separate negotiation. Brokers need card processing, bank transfers and often local and crypto methods, each with its own underwriting. Processors read your website and legal documents before they approve you.

Step 7: Plan acquisition before launch

Brokerages usually grow through introducing brokers and affiliates, search and content, and paid media where they are allowed. Paid media is restricted: Google requires CFD and rolling spot forex advertisers to be certified and licensed in each country they target. Plan your channels before launch so the site, CRM and tracking are ready for them; our forex broker marketing plan guide covers the rules.

Questions

How much money do you need to start a forex brokerage?

You need regulatory capital plus launch and running costs. Capital alone runs from EUR 75,000 to EUR 750,000 at CySEC depending on services, and an MT5 white label is about $2,700–$11,000 a month all-in per B2Broker's April 2026 estimate, before legal, staff and marketing.

Can I start a forex brokerage without a licence?

In most major markets, no: offering forex and CFDs to retail clients is a regulated activity. Some firms operate as introducing brokers for a licensed broker instead. Ask a regulatory lawyer which route fits your plan.

How long does it take to start a forex brokerage?

It usually takes months. Salvus Funds estimates 12 to 16 months for a CySEC licence and four to six months for a Seychelles securities dealer licence, before platform and banking setup.

Is a white label the fastest way to start a brokerage?

A white label is the fastest way to get a platform, because you rent an existing setup instead of licensing one. It does not replace your own licence, banking or compliance, which usually take longer than the technology.
