Why Do Futures Prop Firms Charge Monthly Fees?
Why futures prop firms charged monthly subscriptions, why some moved to one-time fees in 2026, and how to choose a fee model for a new futures firm.

Forex traders are often surprised that futures evaluations are subscriptions. The reason is on the cost side of the business, and it is the first thing a new futures founder needs to model.
What makes futures costs recurring?
Exchange data. CME Group licenses real-time data for its four exchanges (CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX) and publishes a fee list that charges separately for top-of-book and depth-of-market data, with much lower fees for non-professional subscribers than for professional ones. A futures firm pays or passes on that cost for every active trader, every month.
Platforms add to it: per-account or per-user fees through Tradovate Prop, NinjaTrader Prop, Rithmic routes, Volumetrica or DXtrade. A trader who takes three months to pass costs the firm three months of data and platform fees.
Why are some firms moving away from it?
Apex 4.0, effective March 1, 2026, replaced monthly billing with a one-time evaluation fee plus a one-time activation fee, according to trade coverage of the change; check Apex's own site for current terms. One-time fees are easier for traders to compare across firms, simpler for affiliate tracking, and remove the cancellation complaints and chargebacks that subscriptions generate.
| Model | Fits | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | Recurring data and platform costs; traders who take months to pass | Chargebacks from forgotten renewals |
| One-time fee | Easy comparison; affiliate tracking | Firm absorbs data costs for slow traders |
| One-time fee + activation | Recovers funded-stage costs | Must be shown beside the price |
How should a new futures firm choose?
- Model data and platform cost per active trader per month at realistic counts.
- Estimate how long traders take to pass under your rules.
- If you choose a subscription, show the term beside the price and make cancellation one click from the account page.
- If you choose one-time fees, cap the evaluation period or price in the data cost.
Questions
Do all futures prop firms charge monthly?
No. Many historically did, but some moved to one-time fees in 2025–26, including Apex in March 2026 per trade coverage. Check each firm's current pricing page.
Who pays CME data fees at a futures prop firm?
The firm or the trader, depending on the platform agreement. Fees are billed per user and differ for professional and non-professional subscribers, so model them per active account.
Do forex prop firms charge monthly?
Rarely. Forex and CFD firms mostly charge one-time fees because they don't carry per-user exchange data costs.
Can a futures prop firm offer both models?
Some firms offer a subscription and a one-time option side by side. If you do, show the full cost of each over a realistic evaluation period so traders can compare honestly.
