Why Do Most Prop Firms Fail? Seven Causes We See

Why most prop firms fail: no audience, thin reserves, single-platform risk, retroactive rules and lost processors, with dated examples from 2024–26.

Running prop firms ourselves, we see the same failure patterns repeat. Each one has a public example, and each one is preventable at the planning stage, which is why we list them before anyone pays a setup fee.

What are the causes?

  • No audience. Ascetic Capital launched on November 28, 2024 with financial backing and announced its closure on December 3, 2024: "In our first week, we only made four sales."
  • A reserve sized for an average month. A run of passes lands in a quiet sales month and payouts slow; The Funded Trader suspended payouts in 2024 citing an internal audit, per Finance Magnates.
  • Single-platform dependency. Many of the 80 to 100 firms Finance Magnates counted closing in 2024 went after MetaQuotes withdrew support; ProjectX's 2026 exit forced futures firms to migrate.
  • Rules changed after purchase. The fastest way to lose reviews, processors and trust at once.
  • Losing the processor. Chargebacks from traders who misunderstood the rules or a subscription.
  • A website that contradicts the risk engine. The site says one daily-loss figure, the platform enforces another, and every breach becomes a dispute.
  • Racing to the bottom on price against firms with years of payout history.

How common is failure?

Common enough to plan for. Beyond the 2024 estimate, our research notes list closures and wind-downs including True Forex Funds, SurgeTrader and FundingTicks, and Trustpilot suspended several firms' profiles over fake reviews in 2025. Even large firms feel the swings: FTMO's net income fell 59% in 2025 on record revenue, as reported by TradeInformer.

How do you avoid each one?

  • Name where your first 100 buyers come from before you launch.
  • Run a bad-month scenario: twice the expected passes, all withdrawing in one cycle.
  • Plan a second platform route within the first year.
  • Date every rule change and apply it only to new purchases.
  • Hold affiliate commission until the chargeback window has passed.
  • Generate website rules from the same source the risk engine uses.

Questions

How many prop firms have closed?

Finance Magnates estimated 80 to 100 closed in 2024 alone. There is no complete census, because trackers define "active" differently.

What is the most common reason a new prop firm fails?

In our experience, no audience: the budget covered serving traders, not finding them. Ascetic Capital closed after one week and four sales despite financial backing.

Do prop firms fail because traders win too much?

Sometimes, when pricing and reserves did not allow for a good month for traders. That is a pricing and reserve failure, not a reason to rig rules.
