How Many Traders Pass Prop Firm Challenges?
Prop firm pass rates: what the few published figures say, why pass rate drives challenge pricing, and how operators should read and publish it.

For a trader, the pass rate is a probability. For an operator, it is a dial. Every rule you write, from the profit target to the daily loss limit to the minimum days, moves it, and the price of each account size has to match where you set it.
Which rules move the pass rate?
- Profit target: higher targets lower the pass rate.
- Daily and maximum loss: tighter or trailing limits lower it; static limits raise it.
- Number of phases: a 1-step usually passes more traders than a 2-step at the same target, so it is priced higher.
- Minimum trading days and time limits.
- Allowed strategies: news trading, weekend holding, EAs.
- Instruments and leverage, which change the variance of outcomes.
How does the pass rate connect to price?
Fee revenue per account size has to cover the expected payouts to traders who pass and reach a payout, plus affiliates, processing and technology. If a rule change doubles the pass rate, the same price can turn a profitable account size into a loss-making one. That is why firms tie caps and consistency rules to account size, and why the largest accounts are the riskiest product a young firm sells.
Passing is not the same as getting paid. Topstep reports that 33.3% of its Funded Level participants received a payout in 2025, as stated by the firm. Model both steps separately.
Should you publish your pass rate?
Publishing a pass rate is a trust signal, and a growing one: Topstep publishes its figures, and "zero payout denial" claims became a marketing position in 2026, per Babypips coverage. If you publish, define the denominator (evaluations or people), the period and the models included, and update it on a schedule. A number that is clear about its limits persuades more than a flattering one.
Questions
What is a good pass rate for a prop firm?
There is no single good rate. A sustainable one is a rate your prices, caps and reserve were designed for. Track it by account size and model, alongside the payout ratio.
Do 1-step challenges have higher pass rates?
Usually, because there is one phase instead of two, which is why firms price them higher or use a tighter drawdown. Check your own data once you have it.
Why do most traders fail prop firm challenges?
Mostly by hitting loss limits, especially daily limits and trailing drawdowns. Clear rules pages with worked examples reduce rule misunderstandings, which cuts disputes even if pass rates stay similar.
