What Percentage of Traders Get a Prop Firm Payout?

What share of prop firm traders get paid? Topstep's published 2025 figures, why the popular 7% claim is unsourced, and how operators should model it.

Traders ask this to judge their odds. Operators need the same number for a different reason: it drives pricing, the reserve and the payout ratio. The trouble is that almost nobody publishes it, and the figures that circulate online rarely have a source.

What do published figures show?

Read the denominators carefully. "Combines completed" counts evaluations; "participants" counts people, who may buy several evaluations. These are one firm's numbers under its own rules, not a benchmark for yours.

Topstep 2025 trader statistics (as stated by the firm, January–December 2025)
MeasureValue
Trading Combines completed16.8%
Participants reaching Funded Level at least once51.8%
Funded Level participants who received a payout33.3%
Express Funded participants called up to Live Funded0.71%

Why is the 7% figure a problem?

A widely repeated claim says only about 7% of traders are profitable at prop firms. We could not find a primary source for it. Using an unsourced number to model your payouts is how firms end up with reserves sized for a world that doesn't exist.

Payout totals have the same problem. Finance Magnates reported that there is no standard way to verify firms' total payout claims, and quoted an industry source saying "several platforms inflate their payout figures". A percentage with a defined denominator and period is far more useful, to traders and to you, than a cumulative total.

How should an operator model it?

  • Use your own data once you have it, by account size and challenge model.
  • Before launch, use published figures with a named source and period, and stress them: what if pass rates are double?
  • Track the payout ratio (payouts divided by fee revenue) weekly, not just the pass rate.
  • Publish your own statistics when you can. Firms that do, like Topstep, turn a trust problem into proof.

Questions

How many people pass prop firm challenges?

Topstep reports 16.8% of its 2025 Trading Combines were completed, as stated by the firm. Pass rates vary widely by firm, rules and challenge model, and most firms don't publish them.

Is it true only 7% of traders get paid by prop firms?

We could not find a primary source for that figure. Topstep's published 2025 data shows 33.3% of its Funded Level participants received a payout, under its own rules.

Should my prop firm publish payout statistics?

If you can publish them accurately, yes: dated, sourced statistics persuade more than unaudited payout totals. Define every denominator and update them on a schedule.

How should a new prop firm estimate its payout rate?

Start from published figures with a named source and period, stress them by doubling pass rates, then replace them with your own data by account size as soon as you have a few payout cycles.
