How to start a trading academy or forex course: positioning, course platforms and fees, and the rules on earnings claims, finfluencers and affiliates.

Trading education is a crowded market with a trust problem: regulators have spent years pursuing courses that sold lifestyles instead of skills. That is also the opening. An academy that teaches a clear method, shows its rules and makes no money promises stands out.
This guide covers positioning, platforms and the compliance lines a trading educator should not cross. Every figure was checked on 12 October 2026.
How do you position a trading academy?
Narrow beats broad. "Forex for beginners" competes with everyone; "futures order-flow for people who already passed a prop firm evaluation" competes with almost no one. Decide three things before you record anything:
- The market (forex, futures, stocks, crypto) and the style (intraday, swing, systematic).
- The learner: total beginner, struggling intermediate, or funded trader who wants consistency.
- The outcome you can honestly promise: a process, a journal habit, a rule set. Not an income.
Which platform should you use?
Most new academies start on a hosted course platform and move to their own site once the content and audience justify it. Published prices, checked October 2026:
| Option | Published price | Transaction fees | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kajabi Basic / Growth / Pro | $179 / $249 / $499 a month (or $143 / $199 / $399 billed yearly) | Kajabi Payments (US): 2.9% / 2.8% / 2.7% + $0.30; no revenue share | All-in-one course, email and community |
| Teachable Starter | $39 a month ($29 billed yearly) | 7.5% transaction fee plus processing | Testing an idea cheaply |
| Teachable Builder / Growth | $89 / $189 a month ($69 / $139 billed yearly) | 0% with Teachable Payments; card processing such as 2.9% + 30 cents in the US | Growing course catalogue |
| Your own website plus a course tool | Build and hosting quoted per project | Your processor's fees | Brand control, SEO and multiple products |
Why can't a trading academy make income claims?
Because US regulators treat them as the core of the deception in this market. In 2020 the FTC settled with Online Trading Academy over earnings claims it alleged were false or unfounded: the order bans earnings claims that aren't truthful and backed by written substantiation, with a $362 million judgment mostly suspended for inability to pay. In 2022 RagingBull.com and its owners agreed to pay $2.425 million and to stop making earnings claims without evidence that the results are typical.
In October 2021 the FTC sent a notice of penalty offences on money-making claims to more than 1,100 businesses, including investment and business coaching firms, telling them they could face civil penalties per violation. In January 2023 investment-advice company WealthPress became the first recipient to pay civil penalties under that notice: $500,000 plus more than $1.2 million in refunds.
- Do not show student profits, payout screenshots or lifestyle imagery as typical results.
- Do not say "no experience needed" or use false urgency.
- If you show any result, be ready to prove it is typical, in writing.
When does teaching become regulated advice?
General education is not the same as personalised advice. In Lowe v. SEC (1985) the Supreme Court held that bona fide publications of general and regular circulation, offering impersonal advice, fall outside the Investment Advisers Act. For futures and forex, a commodity trading advisor exemption (CFTC Regulation 4.14(a)(9)) applies only if you do not direct client accounts and do not give advice "based on, or tailored to" particular clients' positions or circumstances.
In the UK, the FCA's 2024 guidance (FG24/1) says unauthorised influencers who promote regulated products without approval may commit a criminal offence; in 2025 it charged three "finfluencers" over promoting forex CFD trading, an offence carrying up to 2 years' imprisonment. If you coach individuals, run live trade calls or sell signals, get a lawyer's view in each market you sell into. Our trading Discord guide covers signals in more detail.
How should you handle affiliate and IB deals?
Many academies earn more from broker introducing-broker (IB) rebates and prop firm affiliate codes than from courses. That is a conflict of interest your students need to know about. The FTC's Endorsement Guides FAQ says affiliate relationships should be disclosed clearly, close to the links; "paid link" is adequate but "commissionable link" probably is not.
- Disclose every broker, prop firm and tool partnership on the page where you recommend it, and in videos where you say it.
- Say how you are paid (per sign-up, per lot traded, revenue share) in plain words.
- Never present a partner as the "best" without saying you are paid by it.
How do you package and price an academy?
Price on the depth of support, not on promised outcomes.
- A low-priced self-paced course to prove the method and build reviews.
- A cohort or mentorship tier with live sessions and journal reviews.
- A community subscription for ongoing practice, with easy cancellation.
- A refund policy stated before checkout, and honoured.
What about payments?
Card processors screen this category. Stripe's prohibited list includes "get rich quick" schemes, including investment opportunities, and in Japan it prohibits advisory services on how to profit through trading. Clear, education-only positioning and honest claims make processor approval easier.
What does an academy website need?
An academy site has to sell a course without overselling it: curriculum pages, instructor background, sample lessons, honest reviews, refund terms, risk warnings and affiliate disclosures. PipValley builds websites for prop firms and the trading businesses next to them; we have not built an academy site for a client, and we would build yours to the rules above. Questions
Do you need a licence to sell a trading course?
General, impersonal education usually does not need an adviser licence in the US, following Lowe v. SEC. Personalised advice, trade calls or managing accounts can trigger adviser or CFTC registration, and the UK has its own promotion rules. Check with a lawyer.
Can a trading course show student results?
Only if the results are truthful and you can prove they are typical, according to FTC orders against trading educators such as Online Trading Academy and RagingBull.com. Screenshots of best-case profits are a common source of enforcement.
What platform is best for a trading course?
Hosted platforms are fastest: Teachable starts at $39 a month with a 7.5% fee, and Kajabi at $179 a month with no revenue share, as published in October 2026. Your own site gives more control and better SEO.
Do I have to disclose broker affiliate links?
Yes. The FTC Endorsement Guides expect clear disclosure of material connections, close to the link. Disclose how you are paid by each broker or prop firm you recommend.
