How to Start a Trading Discord: Billing and Rules

How to start a paid trading Discord: billing with Discord, Whop or LaunchPass, community design, and the regulation risks of signals and earnings claims.

Paid trading Discords are communities where members pay a monthly fee for chat, education, live sessions and often trade alerts. They are cheap to start and easy to grow on social media. They are also where regulators have found some of the worst conduct in retail trading, so the way you set one up decides whether it is a business or a liability.

Our team runs prop firms with active trader communities, so the community mechanics here come from practice. The billing figures are as published by each provider on 12 October 2026.

How do you charge for a Discord server?

You need something that takes payment and gives the member a role that unlocks paid channels, then removes it when they stop paying. Three common options:

Paid Discord billing options as published (provider pages; checked 12 October 2026)
OptionPublished feesNotes
Discord Server SubscriptionsCreators keep 90% after certain fees (Discord, Dec 2022)Native to Discord; eligibility and country limits apply
Whop2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card payment; +1.5% international; optional extras such as billing 0.5%; $15 per disputeMarketplace plus role gating; payout fees from $2.50
LaunchPassBasic free with no transaction fee; Premium $29 a month + 3.5%; Stripe charges 2.9% + 30 cents separatelyWorks with Discord, Telegram and Slack

How should you structure the community?

The servers that last are run like a product, not a group chat.

  • Free tier: announcements, rules, a general chat and a sample of the education. This is your funnel.
  • Paid tier: education library, live sessions, journals and accountability channels.
  • Clear rules pinned at the top: no paid promotion by members, no pumping, no sharing of paid content.
  • Moderators with written guidelines, and logs of what was posted and removed.
  • A risk disclaimer every member accepts at join, and repeated in alert channels.

Are trade signals regulated?

They can be. The line in the US is between impersonal publishing and personalised advice. The Supreme Court's Lowe v. SEC (1985) decision protects bona fide publications of general and regular circulation that give impersonal advice. For futures and forex, the CFTC's 4.14(a)(9) exemption from commodity trading advisor registration applies only if you do not direct client accounts and do not tailor advice to particular clients' positions or circumstances. Answering "what should I do with my position?" in DMs is exactly that.

In the UK, the FCA's guidance FG24/1 says unauthorised influencers promoting regulated products may commit a criminal offence. In 2025 the FCA charged three finfluencers over promoting forex CFD trading to their followers; the offence carries up to 2 years' imprisonment.

  • Do not trade members' accounts or accept logins.
  • Do not give individual position advice in DMs or tickets.
  • Do not accept payment from brokers or issuers to promote them without clear disclosure, and never to promote a stock.
  • If you sell signals into the UK or EU, or for futures and forex, take legal advice on registration first.

What happened in the SEC's Discord case?

In December 2022 the SEC charged eight social media influencers in an alleged $100 million scheme in which, it said, they used Twitter and Discord to promote stocks they had bought and sold into the buying they created, without disclosing their plan. The Department of Justice filed parallel criminal charges. The lesson for any server owner: never promote a position you intend to sell into your members' buying, and disclose your own positions when you post an idea.

What can you say about results?

Very little, unless it is typical and provable. The FTC's case against RagingBull.com, a stock-trading subscription service, ended in 2022 with the owners agreeing to pay $2.425 million and to stop earnings claims unless they have written evidence the results are typical. The order also required an easy way to cancel and consent before recurring billing, which applies directly to monthly Discord subscriptions.

  • No "members made $X this week" posts or screenshots used as marketing.
  • Simple cancellation, stated on the checkout page.
  • Affiliate links to brokers or prop firms disclosed clearly next to the link (FTC Endorsement Guides).

How do you grow a trading Discord without hype?

Growth that survives scrutiny comes from showing the work, not the winnings.

  • Post the process in public: market prep, the rules you trade by, journal reviews of losing trades as well as winners.
  • Run free live sessions on a schedule and invite viewers into the free tier.
  • Publish education on a website and YouTube, which search engines index; Discord itself is not searchable from Google.
  • Use a free trial or a free tier instead of countdown timers and "last spots" messaging.
  • Track retention, not just sign-ups: a server that keeps members for months has a product.

Do you need a website as well as the server?

Yes, for three reasons: Discord is not indexed by search engines, payment processors want a site with terms, refund policy and disclosures, and members want to know who runs the server. A short site with the offer, the educators, rules, risk warnings and the join flow does the job. Our existing guide on running a prop firm Discord community covers the community side for firms.

PipValley builds websites for prop firms and the trading businesses next to them. We have not built a site for a signals community client; if you run one, see websites for trading educators.

Questions

How do I make money from a trading Discord?

Most paid trading Discords charge a monthly subscription through Discord Server Subscriptions, Whop or LaunchPass, which gate paid channels by role. Some add courses or affiliate deals, which must be disclosed.

Is it legal to sell trading signals on Discord?

It depends on the market and whether the signals are personalised. Impersonal publishing is generally protected in the US, but tailored advice, managing accounts or promoting regulated products in the UK can require registration. Take legal advice first.

What fees does Whop charge?

Whop lists 2.7% + $0.30 per successful domestic card payment, 1.5% extra for international cards, optional add-ons and $15 per dispute, as published in October 2026.

How much does Discord take from server subscriptions?

Discord said in December 2022 that creators take home 90% of Server Subscription earnings after certain fees.
