Prop Firm Payment Processing Fees (2026)

What card and crypto payments cost a prop firm in 2026: high-risk merchant account rates, rolling reserves, chargeback fees and crypto gateway fees.

Payments are where many prop firm launches stall. The mainstream processors most founders try first will not take the business, and the processors that will charge more, hold back cash and watch your dispute rate closely. A forex or prop merchant account is not a commodity: the fee is negotiated, and the reserve terms matter more than the rate.

Card processors for high-risk merchants rarely publish rates. We use published industry averages where a processor gives them, published crypto gateway fees, and label every estimate. Checked 12 October 2026.

Why can a prop firm not use Stripe?

Stripe's restricted businesses list includes "funded prop trading" under prohibited financial products and services. Other mainstream processors take similar positions or review prop firms case by case. That pushes most firms to high-risk card processors and crypto gateways, which price the risk into fees and reserves.

What do high-risk card processors charge?

High-risk card pricing is mostly by quote. PaymentCloud, a high-risk processor, publishes averages in a guide updated July 18, 2026. Treat them as a starting point for your own quotes, not a price list for prop firms specifically.

What do crypto gateways charge?

Crypto gateways publish their fees, and they are usually lower than high-risk card rates. Traders who pay in crypto also cannot raise a card chargeback, though you still owe them a refund policy.

What does a month of processing really cost?

The fee is visible on every statement. The reserve is not, and it is the line that drains cash in the first months. The example applies the published averages to an illustrative month.

  • Run the same month in crypto at 1% and the fee is about $500 with no reserve, but most traders still expect a card option.
  • Reserves compound: by month six you may have several months of reserve held at once.
Illustrative month: $50,000 card sales, 500 transactions, 10 chargebacks (estimate; method: PaymentCloud averages applied to assumed volume)
LineCalculationAmount
Processing fees3.95% x $50,000 + $0.25 x 500about $2,100
Chargeback fees10 x $20$200, plus the refunded amounts
Rolling reserve held10% x $50,000$5,000 held, released months later
Cash you do not have this monthFees + reserveabout $7,300

How do chargebacks affect the cost?

Chargebacks cost a fee, the refunded sale and, past a threshold, the account itself. Visa's acquirer monitoring program (VAMP) counts disputes and fraud reports against transactions; industry reporting says the merchant "excessive" ratio fell to 1.5% from April 1, 2026, with a minimum of 1,500 disputes and fraud reports before the ratio applies. Processors usually act long before card-scheme limits.

The cheapest chargeback is the one that never happens. Clear rules on the website, the refund policy beside the price, a recognizable billing descriptor and fast support all reduce disputes, and a processor reviewing your application reads those pages first.

What do processors check before they quote?

Underwriters price risk from what they can see. A complete application usually gets a better quote and a smaller reserve.

  • Company documents and the jurisdiction you are incorporated in.
  • A live website with terms, refund policy, risk disclosure, privacy policy and contact details.
  • Clear product descriptions and prices that match the checkout.
  • Processing history and chargeback ratios, if you have them.
  • Restricted-countries list and how you enforce it.

Questions

What are payment processing fees for a prop firm?

Prop firms on high-risk card accounts typically pay about 3.5%–4% plus $0.25 per transaction, based on PaymentCloud's published averages, plus chargeback fees from about $20 and a rolling reserve of 5%–10% of volume. Exact rates are quote only.

Can a prop firm get a forex merchant account?

Yes, usually through high-risk processors rather than mainstream ones; Stripe lists funded prop trading as prohibited. Expect a quote, a reserve and an underwriting review of your website, terms and refund policy.

Are crypto payments cheaper for prop firms?

Usually, yes. NOWPayments publishes fees from 1% and BitPay from 1% to 2% plus 25 cents by volume, with higher fees for high-risk industries. Crypto payments also avoid card chargebacks.

What is a rolling reserve?

A rolling reserve is a share of your card sales that the processor holds back for a set period to cover chargebacks. Published guides put it at about 5%–10% of volume, held for months.
